vision to fruition

Multicultural Aged Care Services Geelong Inc. (MACS) has a history that’s closely linked to the local migrant population it seeks to care for.

Within Geelong’s aging multicultural community, the need for culturally appropriate residential aged care was becoming necessary. An innovative and integrated provider was desperately needed and with the support of Geelong Ethnic Communities Council (GECC) a solution was finally attainable.

In May 1994, the dream to provide respectful care services to the aging culturally and linguistically diverse community, took its first of many steps by opening the doors to Geelong Multicultural Hostel. The hostel operated successfully for 10 years before a high care facility, named Mary Costa House, was constructed on the same site.

With the goal of creating a care model, termed ‘Invisible Walls’, that accommodated the aging transition with minimal stress and disruption to residents, MACS opened Bella Chara in 2009, adding a 60-bed supported residential facility to its growing list of services. During the same period, MACS added independent living units, MACS Complete Care (brokered service) palliative care, dementia specific care, respite care and home care packages which deliver in-home care to complete the comprehensive list of services it could provide its community.

Today, MACS has a reputation as an outstanding aged care provider, built on a foundation of hard work, collaboration and respect. With fully integrated residential and home-based services, MACS can seamlessly provide care that respects the resident’s cultural background and personal wishes, whilst providing the evolving level of care necessary.

Progress and success at MACS has never been automatic. More than 20 years ago it required vision, passion, concern and caring by dedicated individuals who came together to form a team. Today, MACS continues to have a high staff retention rate. Dedication is not just about going to work; it is the love of the job, the people and the belief in providing the best care. There is a deep sense of ownership for the organisation and the dedication to fulfill the mission remains the same today as it did years ago. Teamwork has been the by-product of strong leadership, tolerance, loyalty, integrity and integration which defines who we are as an organisation.
