October News from CEO, Joy Leggo

In CEO News

Dear friends,

It has been distressing to watch the recent ABC’s Four Corners programs to see the footage around neglect and abuse in Aged Care facilities.  The special two-part investigation of the failings in aged care called ‘Who Cares?’ drew on interviews the ABC investigation’s team held with workers and families of their experiences in aged care. It drew on multiple case studies that came to the network’s attention through a public call for people to share their aged care stories.

There were many distressing stories aired making complaints of poor quality care. Some of the issues raised included: quality, accreditation and complaints, profits, ratios and staffing issues.

The Prime Minister has also announced there will be a Royal Commission into Aged Care Services.  We welcome this Royal Commission as it will provide an opportunity to engage in a much-needed, constructive national discussion about the future of aged care.  I trust the Royal Commission will address how as a society, we will deliver the quality services our growing ageing population will need and how those services will be sustainably funded.

We believe that all older Australians should be able to expect high quality care and strive to provide that each and every day in every aged care facility. We share the dismay felt by the community when older Australians and their families are hurt by poor or negligent care.

If you or your family have any concerns about the care you (or your loved one) are receiving, please contact myself or a member of your care team.

If you prefer or feel more comfortable, you can directly contact the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) for advice and support or make contact with the Australian Government’s Aged Care Complaints Commissioner:

Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN): http://www.opan.com.au/advocacy/ phone 1800700 600

Australian Government’s Aged Care Complaints Commissioner: https://www.agedcarecomplaints.gov.au/internet/accc/publishing.nsf/Content/Home phone 1800 550 552.

We at MACS remain committed to providing the highest quality care and are here to support you and discuss any queries or concerns you may have with any of the issues raised by Four Corners.
