May 2018 News from CEO, Joy Leggo
Winter is nearly upon us and I can’t stress strongly enough as per our Director of Care’s graphics in the Residential report, the need for everyone to have their flu vaccination. We care for older people across a variety of settings whose immune systems may be compromised and it is just so important that we keep everyone in our community as well as possible. If you are feeling unwell or have a cold or sniffle, please don’t visit. We hope to get through the winter season again this year without having to “shut down” any of our areas.
As you all move into the colder months I am moving into some warmer weather and taking 10 weeks leave from Monday 7 May returning on Monday 9 July. Luba Pryslak our Director of Care will be Acting Chief Executive Officer during this time and will be supported by Alwin Gallina, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chris Hudgell, Business Manager. Shari Mulder will become Acting Director of Care and during my 10 weeks absence we will also be working with our RN Division 1 Nurses in trialling some different ways to oversee the care of our Residents. Luba can be contacted on 5279 6800 or by email firstname.lastname@example.org I am sure you will all give her your support during this time.
Saturday 21 April was a busy day at MACS. Early in the morning staff and volunteers were busy running a Garage Sale. With the builders now gone we had an opportunity to clear out all our storage sheds and reconfigure the area for our maintenance, storage and boutique requirements. Our current maintenance shed will be converted into a Men’s Shed later this year which will further enhance our activity offerings. Our Garage Sale raised $704 and will go towards our 2018 Annual Giving Appeal. The garage sale and our weekly ‘meat raffle’ has raised $558 to date and kick started our Appeal to the tune of $1262. Information for our 2018 Annual Giving Appeal will be sent to you this month and it would be wonderful if you could support this appeal. This year we hope to raise $20,000 to implement the final component of our Mindful Moves program to include ‘Dance Moves’, which will complete the total package. Dance Moves will be based on different themes and dance styles, such as jazz and National dances. Classes will be tailored for both chair bound and mobile residents and home care consumers allowing them to express themselves freely and not be restricted to specific movement and breath patterns. Not only does dance benefit the body and mind, but it also promotes emotional wellbeing and combats isolation. It’s inclusive in that there are no targets and no failures – everyone can participate. All donations above $2 are tax deductible and will be truly appreciated.
On the afternoon of 21 April our MACS Choir, under the guidance of Jill our Director of Music and Gail our Choir Manager, entertained our residents, families and friends with a wonderful concert “The MACS Choir Favourite Songs”. It was such a pleasure to be entertained with songs from many different cultures and to hear the audience sing along to the familiar songs.
Anyone from our MACS family are welcome to join the choir which practices every Thursday afternoon in the Chapel and perform at various locations throughout the year.
Stay warm and healthy everyone as I enjoy some extended sunshine.
