Dear friends,

Who would have ever imagined that an old 20 foot shipping container could attract so much media attention, not just locally, but nationally and internationally? Well that is exactly what happened when we converted the container into a ‘visitor’s pod’, to enable residential residents to have precious face-to-face time with their families during the current COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting residents’ visitation restrictions.

Thanks to MACS staff, residents and families who helped to make this happen, and particular thanks to our wonderful local builders Mark West and team for a quick 3 week turnaround converting the container into a warm and cosy place for families to connect. For those of you who haven’t seen it yet, the visitor’s pod is fully customised and comes complete with windows, heating and cooling, a carpeted floor, a phone, chairs, and even flowers that bring some home comforts to the modified container.

And just as amazing, Bella Chara has their very own visitor’s pod built under the veranda at Bella Chara in only 5 days! Thanks again to Mark West and his team. It looks so good we will now keep it as a permanent feature!

The innovative visitor’s pod has been featured on the Channel 9 news and stories printed in the Geelong Advertiser, Herald Sun and City of Greater Geelong publications. Not only that, it has also been picked up by Detroit News in the USA . Other aged care facilities have contacted us showing great interest in providing a similar solution in their facilities, including an aged care provider with four facilities in the UK.

But most importantly, we have been delighted with the positive response and feedback we have received from our residents and families about what the visitor’s pods means to them.

“Thank you to MACS and extended family. An innovative idea bought to fruition. Saw Mum yesterday after 5 weeks.”

“Very innovative. We truly appreciate your forward thinking and always putting the residents first.”

“I know mum loves seeing her visitors again, even if there isn’t any hugging.”

“The staff at MACS are amazing. They always make magic happen! I loved visiting Dad today and singing ‘you are my sunshine with him’. Thank you for making this happen.”

“The staff are truly amazing at MACS. It was so great to visit Mum today. The pod was just wonderful and so too was the happy activity going on in the piazza. Thank you to everyone,”

“Thank you MACS! We have loved visiting mum at Bella Chara and she has loved to see us as well. It’s a terrific idea and wonderful that you got it up and running so quickly. Well done to all involved. All the lovely staff members are always very kind and caring so it’s not surprising that they came up with this.”

“Visited mum the other day. Great initiative to safely visit loved ones.”

Once the COVID-19 restrictions are relaxed in the future, the visitor’s pod currently in the piazza, will be used for extra office space and a safe space for visitors and residents if and when other medical restrictions apply.

Booking for the visitor’s pods can be made by phoning (03) 5279 6800 for residential and (03) 5202 5300 for Bella Chara during business hours Monday to Friday.

On another happy note, it is wonderful to hear such lovely feedback from home care consumers and their families about the wonderful service our Home Services Well-being workers are offering during this difficult time.

“Thanks to the Well-being and MACS team for the wonderful support and service MACS is offering in these trying Health Alerts Times.”

“It is an extremely complex time for doing your work and from our perspective MACS have done a fantastic job.”

Although from what I hear, I suspect it is mutually beneficial! The well-being workers have been enjoying getting tips on sewing, cooking, gardening and baking while consumers have been revisiting their past skills and hobbies.

With warm regards,

Don’t forget to wash those hands!
